語源
「attorn」は古フランス語の『atorner』（綴りは『attorner』『atorner』とも）に由来し、接頭辞『a-』と語根『torner』（『回す／向ける』の意）から成ります。
『attorn』は古フランス語『atorner』やアンゴ＝ノルマン語の用法から中英語の『attournen』のような形に変化し、最終的に現代英語の動詞『attorn』（過去・過去分詞形は『attorned』）になりました。
元々は「（忠誠・注意を）誰かへ向ける／向け直す」という意味でしたが、次第に法的用法の「新しい主／家主を承認する、賃借権などを譲る／移す」という意味へと変化しました。
