「atheism」はギリシャ語を経て新ラテン語・フランス語から起こり、具体的にはギリシャ語の単語「atheos（ἀθεος）」に由来する。接頭辞「a-」は「～なし」を、 「theos」は「神」を意味した。
「atheism」は、後期ギリシャ語/中世ラテン語の単語『atheismus』および古フランス語の『athéisme』を経て、中英語を通じて現代英語の『atheism』になった。
当初は「神のいない（無神的）」を意味していたが、時間とともに「神を信じないこと」や「神の存在を否定する教義」を表す現在の意味に発展した。
