語源
「atellan」はラテン語の「Atellāna（fābula）」に由来し、「Atella」はカンパニアの都市名であった。
「Atellāna fābula」（複数形「Atellanae」）というラテン語表現が、中世・近世の学術的用例を経て英語の「atellan」となり、劇ジャンルを指す語として定着した。
当初は「アテッラ出身の、またはアテッラに関する」という意味だったが、次第に特定の喜劇ジャンル「アテッラ喜劇」を指す語へと意味が絞られた。
