語源
『ataxiaphasia』は医学用語としてギリシャ語由来の語要素から来ており，具体的には『ataxia』（ギリシャ語の接頭辞 'a-' 「〜がない」＋ 'taxis' 「秩序」）と『aphasia』（接頭辞 'a-' 「〜がない」＋ 'phasis' 「発話」）に由来する。
『ataxiaphasia』は20世紀の神経学で用いられた記述的表現『ataxic aphasia』（運動失調様の失語）から発展し，その後いくつかの臨床・学術文献で合成語として単語化された。
当初は運動失調様の特徴と失語の共存を示す語として用いられたが，次第に小脳関与と関連する協調性のない不規則な発語パターンを指す場合に用いられるようになった。
