語源
「asymptotic」はギリシャ語の『asymptōtos』に由来し、接頭辞の『a-』は「～でない」、語根の『symptō』（『syn-』＋『piptein』由来）は「一緒に落ちる（＝一致する）」を意味しました。
『asymptōtos』は後期ラテン語（asymptoticus）を経てフランス語の『asymptotique』になり、18〜19世紀にかけて現代英語の 'asymptotic' として定着しました。
当初は「（つまり）一致しない／交わらない」という意味でしたが、次第に数学的な専門用語として「（曲線・値に）近づくが交わらない」という現在の意味に発展しました。
