語源
「astrolabe」はギリシア語の『astrolabion』に由来し、『astron』は「星」を、『lambanein』は「取る（捕らえる）」を意味した。
『astrolabion』は中世ラテン語の『astrolabium』（および古フランス語の『astrolabe』）を経て、最終的に近代英語の『astrolabe』になった。
当初は「星を捕らえる（測る）もの」を意味したが、次第に「天体の位置を測り、時刻や位置の問題を解くための器具」という現在の意味に発展した。
