語源
「astroid」はギリシャ語の語 'astroides' に由来し、要素 'astr-'（ギリシャ語 'astron' より）は「星」を、接尾辞 '-oid'（ギリシャ語 'eidos' より）は「形・〜のような」を意味しました。
'astroides' はラテン語／ニューヨークラテン語的な語形を経て英語の 'astroid' として採用され、「星のような」という意味から数学では特定の4つのとがった頂点をもつ曲線の名称になりました。
当初は「星のような」という一般的な意味でしたが、次第に幾何学における特定の4尖のヒポサイクロイドを指す専門用語へと意味が収束しました（また歴史的には 'asteroid' の綴りの変種として用いられることもありました）。
