語源
「Astraea」は古代ギリシア語の名前「Astraia（Αστραία）」に由来し、語幹の『astr-』（『astron』）は「星」を意味した。
「Astraea」はラテン語でも'Astraea'として使われ、古典や中世の文献で用いられたのち、近代英語では神話上の固有名詞としてほぼ変わらず受け継がれ、後に小惑星名や分類学名としても使われた。
当初は「星の乙女」や「星のような者」を意味したが、次第に正義の女神を指すようになり、さらに小惑星名や属名など固有名詞としての用法が広がった。
