語源
「asthenics」はギリシャ語を経て近代ラテン語から来ており、特にギリシャ語の「asthenēs（ἀσθενής）」に由来する。接頭辞の「a-」は「～がない」を意味し、「sthenos」は「力」を意味する。
ギリシャ語の「asthenēs」から近代ラテン語の「asthenia」が生じ、19世紀に英語の「asthenia」として入ってきた。同じ語根から形容詞「asthenic」が作られ、衰弱状態や衰弱しやすい体質を指す名詞形として「asthenics」が派生した。
当初は「力がない状態」を指していたが、時代と共に医学的な衰弱や虚弱の特定の状態、あるいは虚弱体質の人々を指す用法へと発展した。
