語源
『asst』は『assistant』の略である。『assistant』はラテン語の 'assistens'（『assistere／adsistere』の現在分詞）に由来し、接頭辞'ad-'は「～へ／～に」を、'sistere'（'stare' に由来）は「立つ」を意味した。
『assistant』は古フランス語の 'assistant' を経て中英語に入り、現代英語の 'assistant' になった。後に筆記や会話で短縮され 'asst' や 'asst.' のような略語が使われるようになった。
元々は「寄り添って立つ（そばにいる）」という意味合いがあり、やがて仕事や役割で他者を助ける人を指す意味に変化した。略語 'asst' はその現代的意味を保っている。
