'assort'は古フランス語の'asserter'（assorter）に由来し、さらに俗ラテン語の'ad-sortire'（くじで配る）に遡る。構成要素にはラテン語の'ad-'（〜へ）と'sors／sortis'（くじ・運命・種類）がある。
'assort'は古フランス語'assorter'から中英語の'assorten'などを経て現代英語の'assort'になった。名詞'assortment'は後に英語で形成された。
当初は「くじで配る、割り当てる」という意味合いが強かったが、時代を経て「整理する、分類する、（〜と）調和する」というより広い意味になった。
