語源
「assize」は古フランス語の単語「assise」に由来し、さらにラテン語の語根「assidere」（ad- + sedere＝「横に座る／座ること」）にさかのぼる。
「assize」は古フランス語の「assise」から変化し、中英語を経て現代英語の「assize」（および複数形「assizes」）になった。
当初は「座ること・会期」を意味し、転じて（規則・条例）や（裁判の）会期を指すようになり、英法史では主に巡回裁判所の会期を示す語になった。
