語源
「assiniboin」はオジブワ語の「Asiniibwaan」から来ており、そこで「asini-」は「石」、「-ibwaan」は「スー（族）」を意味した。
「Asiniibwaan」はカナダのフランス語や初期英語で「Assiniboin」や「Assiniboine」として採用され、最終的に民族名や川の名としての現代的な変種「assiniboin」になった（表記の差異がある）。
当初は「石のスー族」を意味しており、徐々に部族の民族名や地名（川名）として使われるようになった。
