語源
「assay」は古フランス語の語『essai』（または動詞形の『essayer』『assaier』）に由来し、『試み・試験』を表していました。さらに、ラテン語由来の『exagium』（秤量・検査に関連）からの影響もあります。
『assay』は古フランス語の『essai／essayer』から中英語の『assayen』のような形に変化し、最終的に現代英語の『assay』（および分詞・動名詞の『assaying』）になりました。
当初は『（物を）秤にかける・調べる』という意味でしたが、時間とともに『（化学的・物質的に）試験・分析する』および『試みる』という現在の意味に発展しました。
