「assart」は古フランス語の『essarter』（『essartier』とも）に由来し、要素の『es-』（ラテン語の ex- に由来）は「外へ」を、『sarter/essarter』は「掘り起こす・伐り開く」を意味した。
『assart』は古フランス語の『essarter』（中世の諸形）から中英語の『assarten／assart』へ変化し、最終的に現代英語の『assart』になった。
もともとは「土地を掘り起こす・伐り開く」を意味していたが、時とともにこの基本的な意味は保たれたまま語の使用はまれになり、主に歴史的・法律的文脈で用いられるようになった。
