「aspidobranchia」は分類学上のNew Latin（学名）に由来し、ギリシャ語の「aspis」（盾）と「branchia」（鰓）から構成されている。
「aspidobranchia」は19世紀の動物学/学名としてギリシャ語要素から作られ、古い軟体動物学の分類で用いられたが、その後「Archaeogastropoda」や現代のクレード（例：Vetigastropoda）などに再編され、用いられなくなった。
当初は盾状の鰓を持つ腹足類の群を指していたが、時間とともに系統的に不適切と判断され、現在では使用が減り構成群が再分類されている。
