語源
「aspidistra」は新ラテン語に由来し、ギリシャ語の「aspidistron」から来ており、「aspis」は「盾」を意味した。
ギリシャ語の「aspidistron」は植物学上の学名「Aspidistra」として19世紀にラテン語へ取り入れられ、英語では植物名「aspidistra」として用いられるようになった。
当初は葉の盾状の形を指す「小さな盾」を意味していたが、次第にアスピディストラ属の学名となり、現在ではその植物自体を指す語となっている。
