『aspergillus』は新ラテン語に由来し、最終的にはラテン語の『aspergillum』（聖水を撒く刷毛や器具）に由来します。ラテン語の『aspergere』は「撒く」を意味しました。
ラテン語の『aspergillum』（聖水撒布器具）が18世紀の菌学者（特にピエル・アントニオ・ミケーリ）によって属名『Aspergillus』として採用されました。これは菌の分生子柄が小さな聖水撒布器に似ていたためで、この用法が現在の学名を定着させました。
当初は『撒くための器具』を指しましたが、見た目の類似により菌に転用され、現在は『アスペルギルス属の菌』を意味します。
