語源
「askos」は古代ギリシア語の単語「askos（ἀσκός）」に由来し、語根は「ワインや液体を入れる革袋」を意味していた。
「askos」は古代ギリシア語（ἀσκός）からラテン語系・中世期の用法（学術・骨董文献での「ascus」等の形）を経て、考古学・美術史で用いられる語として英語に取り入れられた。
当初は直に「革袋（ワイン袋）」を指していたが、次第にその形を模した「皮袋形の土器」をも意味するようになり、英語では主に考古学的文脈で後者の意味で使われることが多い。
