語源
「ashram」はサンスクリット語の語『āśrama』（आश्रम）に由来し、語根『śram』は「努力する・つらさを耐える」を意味した。
19世紀に植民地期の文献を通じてヒンディー語/サンスクリット（デーヴァナーガリー: आश्रम）から英語に取り入れられ、現代英語の『ashram』となった。
当初は「苦行者が修行するための隠遁所・修行場」を意味していたが、次第に「ヒンドゥー教の隠遁所・精神的リトリートや共同体」という現在の意味に広がった。
