語源
「asherah」はウガリット語／ヘブライ語などの北西セム語の語「Athirat（アティラト）」に由来し、『女主人（女神）』を意味する称号として用いられた。
「asherah」はウガリット語・古ヘブライ語の神名「Athirat」などから変化し、聖書ヘブライ語の表記を通じて英語に入って現代英語の「asherah」になった。
当初は主に女神自身を指したが、次第にその崇拝に用いられる柱や聖樹などの祭具にも用いられるようになり、この意味の拡張が考古学・聖書研究で用いられている。
