語源
『asherah』は『ヘブライ語』の語『ʾašerāh』(אֲשֵׁרָה)に由来し、ウガリト語の女神名『アトヒラ（Athirat）』と密接に関連している。
『asherah』はウガリト語の語『Athirat』から変化して聖書ヘブライ語の『ʾašerāh』となり、ギリシャ語・ラテン語の聖書訳を介して現代英語の『asherah』に至った。
当初は女神（およびその崇拝）を指す固有名詞であったが、次第に彼女に関連する物理的な祭具（柱や聖木）を指す語としても用いられるようになった。
