語源
「ascii」は英語に由来し、頭字語である「ASCII」（American Standard Code for Information Interchange：米国規格の情報交換用符号）を指す。
ASCIIは1960年代初頭に策定され（ANSI X3.4として形づくられ）、それ以前のテレタイプや電信符号（Murray符号やITA2など）に端を発し、最終的に広く採用される標準となった。
当初はその正式名称の標準を指したが、徐々にその規格で符号化されたテキストやその符号化を表す形容詞としても使われるようになった。
