語源
『ascidiozoa』はニューラテン語に由来し、最終的にはギリシャ語に遡る。具体的にはギリシャ語の『askidion』（『askis』の小形）で「小さな袋」を意味し、『zoon』は「動物」を意味する。
『ascidiozoa』は属名『Ascidia』（ギリシャ語からニューラテン語へ借用）と動物群を示す接尾辞『-zoa』の結合から発展し、古い動物分類文献で用いられ、英語の学術用語として残った。
当初は『小さな袋状の動物』という像を伝えていたが、次第にホヤ類の分類名として用いられるようになった。
