語源
「ascendant」はラテン語の『ascendere』（現在分詞形 'ascendens'）に由来し、'ad-'（同化して 'as-'）は「〜へ」を、'scandere'は「登る」を意味した。
『ascendant』はラテン語の 'ascendens' から古フランス語の 'ascendant' を経て中英語（'ascendent'／'ascendant'）に入り、現代英語の 'ascendant' になった。
当初は「上昇する、登る」を意味していたが、次第に「上昇するもの」「先祖」「優勢になっている人・勢力」などの意味に拡大した。
