語源
'ascendance'はラテン語の'ascendere'に由来し、'ad-'は「〜へ」、'scandere'は「登る」を意味した。
'ascendance'は中世ラテン語の'ascendentia'や中世フランス語の'ascendance'を経て、中英語の'ascendence'などの形で取り入れられ、最終的に現代英語の'ascendance'になった。
当初は「登る・上昇する行為」を意味したが、時を経て「権力や影響力への上昇・優勢な状態」という現在の主要な意味に発展した。
