「asbestosis」は現代英語に由来し、ギリシャ語の『asbestos』(『消えない』『不滅の』の意)とギリシャ語接尾辞『-osis』(『病気』『異常状態』の意)の結合から来ている。
「asbestosis」は19世末から20世紀初頭にかけて、医学用語として『asbestos』＋『-osis』の結合で作られ、20世紀初頭頃に英語の医学用語として定着した。
