「artotyrite」はギリシャ語の「Αρτοτυρίται」（音写：Artotyritai）に由来し、ここで「artos」は「パン」、「tyros」は「チーズ」を意味した。
「artotyrite」はギリシャ語の「Artotyritai」から後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語の「Artotyritae」などを経て、教会史や学術文献において英語の「artotyrite」として採用された。
