語源
「artificer」はラテン語の「artificium」から来ており、ここで「ars／art-」は「技術・芸術」を、「facere」は「作る」を意味した。
「artificium」は古フランス語の「artifice／artificier」を経て中英語の「artificer」になり、現代英語の「artificer」へと至った。
当初は「技術によって作る人（作り手）」を意味しており、時代を経てその基本的意味を保ちながら「発明者」や軍需技術者、現代のファンタジー的職業などへと用法が広がった。
