語源
「artesonado」はスペイン語に由来し、特に名詞「artesa」（木製のこね桶・溝形の容器）に由来する。天井の窪んだパネルがこね桶のくぼみに似ているところから比喩的に用いられた。
「artesonado」は中世スペインの建築用語として発展し、格天井を指す語として用いられた。特にムデハル（Mudejar）の木工装飾で使われ、イベリア半島や植民地建築の記述に広まった。
