語源
「Artemisium」は古代ギリシャ語の「Artemísion」(Ἀρτεμίσιον)に由来し、語根の「Artemis」は女神アルテミスを指し、接尾辞はその女神に関係する場所を示した。
「Artemísion」は古典期・中世の文献でラテン語形「Artemisium」に翻案され、そのラテン語形が地名および関連する海戦名として英語に入った。
当初は「アルテミスの場所／聖域」を意味していたが、次第に地名および紀元前480年の海戦の呼称として用いられるようになった。
