語源
『アルテミス』は古代ギリシャ語の『Ἄρτεμις』（アルテミス）に由来する。語根は確定しておらず、一部の学説は「artem-」を「安全/無事」を意味する語根と結び付けるが議論がある。
『アルテミス』は古代ギリシャからラテン語にも受け継がれ、古典や中世の文献を通じて保存され、文学的用法を経て現代英語の固有名詞「Artemis」になった。
当初は特定の女神やその信仰を指していたが、時代を経て比喩的・派生的に現代の計画名・作品名・天体名などにも用いられるようになった（女神の持つ属性との結び付きは残る）。
