語源
「artefact」はラテン語に由来し、具体的にはラテン語の語句「arte factum」から来ている。ここで「arte」は（ラテン語の 'ars' の奪格で）「技術・技巧により」を意味し、「factum」は「作られた物」を意味する。
「artefact」は19世紀にラテン語の語句「arte factum」から英語に入った。その後現代英語の「artefact」として定着し、米国形の綴り「artifact」も用いられるようになった。
当初は「人間の技術によって作られた物」を指していたが、現在では考古学的・文化的な物を指す場合と、データや画像処理における人工的な現れを指す場合の両方で使われている。
