語源
「arsenic」は中世ラテン語の『arsenicum』に由来し、この語は黄色の鉱物（黄砒、硫化ヒ素）を指していた。
ギリシャ語の『arsenikon（ἀρσενικόν）』が中世ラテン語『arsenicum』に入り、中英語（'arsenik'/'arsenike'）を経て現代英語の『arsenic』になった。
当初は「黄色い黄砒の鉱物」を意味していたが、時間とともに化学元素としてのヒ素やその化合物、特に毒性に関する意味に拡張された。
