「arrowworm」は現代英語の合成語で、'arrow'（古英語 'earh'、射出する投射物の意味）と 'worm'（古英語 'wyrm'、蛇や虫の意味）から成り、矢のような形をした虫を表すために作られた。
19世紀に 'arrow-worm' のようなハイフン付きまたは合成形で登場し、Chaetognatha門の生物を指す呼称として用いられた。時代とともにハイフンが外れ、現代の単語 'arrowworm' になった。
当初は「矢の形をした虫」を指していたが、次第に特定の分類群（矢虫類）を指す一般名として定着した。
