語源
「arrowweed」は近代英語に由来し、語は『arrow』（矢）と『weed』（草、植物）の複合語で、『arrow』は投射具を、『weed』は植物を指した。
『arrow』は中英語を経て古英語の 'earh'（矢）に遡り、『weed』は古英語の 'wēod'（草、薬草）に由来する。やがて植物の呼称として『arrowweed』が形成された。
名称は当初『矢』との関連（茎が矢に使われた等）を示した可能性があるが、時間とともに種名・低木の一般名として定着し、必ずしも矢としての用途を示さなくなった。
