語源
『arrondissement』はフランス語に由来する語で、語自体は『arrondissement』であり、動詞『arrondir』（接頭辞の『a-』はラテン語の'ad-'に由来）が「丸くする」を意味し、接尾辞『-ment』が名詞化して「行為・結果」を表した。
『arrondissement』は動詞『arrondir』（「丸くする」）からフランス語で発展し、『rond』（丸い）は最終的にラテン語の『rotundus』に由来する。接尾辞『-ment』で名詞化され『arrondissement』となり、そのまま英語に借用された。
