語源
'arpent'は古フランス語の語『arpent』に由来し、もとはロープで測ることを意味するゲルマン系の語源を持つ。
『arpent』は古フランス語の『arpent』から変化し（測量用のロープや長さを指す語として）、英語に借用されて土地測量の専門用語となった。
当初は測量用のロープの長さや測る行為を指していたが、次第にフランスやその植民地で使われる長さ・面積の単位を表す語になった。
