語源
「aromaticity」は形容詞「aromatic」と名詞化接尾辞「-ity」から作られた英語で、「芳香がある状態・性質」を表す抽象名詞として起こった。
「aromaticity」は形容詞「aromatic」から派生した。「aromatic」はフランス語の『aromatique』（または中世ラテン語の『aromaticus』）に入り、その語源はギリシャ語の『ἀρωματικός』および『ἄρωμα』（『香辛料、良い香り』）にさかのぼる。
元々は日常語で『良い香り』を意味していたが、19〜20世紀に化学の専門用語として、特定の環状化合物の電子構造と安定性を指す意味が発達した。
