語源
「armrest」は英語に由来し、古英語の 'earm'（『腕』を意味）と古英語の 'ræst'（『休息・支え』を意味）という語の合成語として形成されました。
以前の用法では 'arm-rest'（ハイフン付き）や 'arm rest'（2語）という表記が使われ、その後現代英語の単語『armrest』へと定着しました。
当初は「腕を休めるための支え」を意味しており、現代でも基本的な意味はほぼ同じですが、近年は収納やカップホルダーなどの機能を指す場合も含まれるようになりました。
