「armplate」は近代英語の合成語で、'arm'（腕）＋'plate'（板）から成る。'arm'は古英語の'earm'に由来し「腕」を意味し、'plate'は古仏語'plate'（さらに後期ラテン語の語に由来）で「平らな板」を意味する。
『armplate』は中世以降に『arm』と『plate』を組み合わせて作られ、当初は腕に関係する平らな板を示した。甲冑用語（例：vambrace, rerebrace）の影響で、腕を保護する板を特に指すようになった。
