語源
『armoury』（複数形『armouries』）は古フランス語の『armerie』または『armurerie』に由来し、そこでの『arme』は（ラテン語の『arma』から）「武器」を意味していました。
『armoury』は古フランス語の『armerie』／『armurerie』から中英語の『armourie』などを経て、現代英語の『armoury』（米語形は『armory』）になりました。
当初は『武器の場所や備蓄』を意味しており、時とともにその主要な意味は保たれつつ、武器の製作・修理工房や武器・甲冑の博物館を指す用法も生じました。
