「armorer」は中英語の語「armourer」に由来し、さらに古フランス語の「armurier」にさかのぼる。ここで「armure」は「よろい（防具）」を意味し、ラテン語の「arma」は「武器」を意味した。
「armorer」は中英語の「armourer」から変化し、その語は古フランス語の「armurier」から来た。やがて現代英語の「armorer」（米）および「armourer」（英）になった。
