語源
「armchair」は英語で、'arm'（古英語 'earm'＝腕）と 'chair'（古フランス語 'chaiere'、ラテン語 'cathedra'＝座席）を組み合わせて作られた語です。
中英語の 'armcheir' や 'armchayer' のような形から変化し、最終的に現代英語の『armchair』になりました。
当初は「肘掛けのある椅子」という文字通りの意味でしたが、次第に「実務経験のない傍観的評論者」のような比喩的意味も持つようになりました。
