語源
「armature」はフランス語の「armature」に由来し、最終的にはラテン語の「armatura」（「armare」＝『武装する／備え付ける』）にさかのぼる。
ラテン語の「armatura」は古フランス語の「armature」を経て英語に取り入れられ、当初は装備や取り付け具を意味したが、後に技術的な意味（骨組み、電気部品など）が発達した。
当初は「装備・鎧をつけること」を指したが、時間とともに「支えとなる骨組み」や「電気機器の導体部分」などの専門的な意味に変化した。
