語源
『armagnac』はフランス語、具体的にはガスコーニュ地方の地名『Armagnac』に由来する。さらにその地名はガロ＝ローマ時代の人名形『Armaniācus』（『Armanius』『Armanus』のような人名に由来）と「～の場所」を意味するガロ語/後期ラテン語の接尾辞『-ācum』が結びついたものに遡る。
『Armaniācus』はオック語の『Armanhac』に変化し、やがてフランス語の『Armagnac』となり、英語の現代語『armagnac』はこのフランス語から借用され、地方名に由来する蒸留酒の名称として定着した。
元々は「Armaniusの（所有する）土地」を意味していたが、時代とともに地域名となり、さらにその地域で作られる蒸留酒（現在の主な意味）を指すようになった。
