「armadillo」はスペイン語の単語「armadillo」（「armado」の縮小形）に由来し、「小さな鎧を着たもの」を意味する。最終的にはラテン語の'armatus'（'armare'の過去分詞）および'arma'（武器）に遡る。
英語は17世紀にアメリカ大陸との接触を経てスペイン語（およびポルトガル語）から「armadillo」を借用した。スペイン語の語は「armado」（鎧を着た） の縮小形に由来し、ラテン語に遡る。
