「arithmograph」はギリシャ語由来で、'arithmos'（数）と'graphein'（書く）から成り、数字を「書く・記録する」器具を意味する。
この語は19〜20世紀にギリシャ語要素（arithmo- + -graph）を組み合わせて作られ、『arithmometer』などの技術語にならって機械的な計算・記録器具を指す名称として使われ始めた。
