語源
「aristos」は古代ギリシャ語の『ἄριστος』（áristos）に由来し、「最も良い／最上の」という意味を持つ語根である。
『aristos』は結合形の'aristo-'としてラテン語や古仏語に取り入れられ（例：ラテン語'aristocratia'、古仏語'aristocratie'）、そこから英語の'aristocracy'や'aristocrat'などの語が生じた。
当初は文字どおり「最良の」という最上級の意味だったが、やがて「最良の者による支配（支配階級）」のように、社会階級や統治に関する意味を派生させた。
