'aristolochiales'は新ラテン語（植物学ラテン語）由来で、属名'Aristolochia'に植物の目を示す接尾辞'-ales'を付けて作られた語である。'Aristolochia'はギリシャ語の要素（'aristós'＝「最良」、'lóchia'＝「分娩に関すること」）に由来し、かつての薬用用途を示す。
'Aristolochia'（ギリシャ語由来の属名）が新ラテン語に取り入れられ、現代植物学の命名規則に従って属名に'-ales'を付けて'Aristolochiales'という目の名が19〜20世紀の分類で用いられるようになった。
